Photographing the South Downs, Sussex

I find the South Downs unique and a joy to photograph. There are so many pockets of rolling hills and fields, which, when lit by the sun show interesting textures and contours in the landscape. This collection of images I photographed within a few miles of Firle, the majority of these within the Cuckmere Valley. Its oxbow-meandering river and odd-shaped fields entice me back time and time again.

When I'm out with the camera I'm constantly searching for leading lines in the landscape, strange shadows and shapes and unusual weather conditions. More often than not, I'll head out without a tripod and capture whatever draws my interest. Occasionally I'll set off with an image in mind, knowing that the sun will light the scene a certain way and then wait patiently for everything to align before taking the photograph.

The best time to photograph the South Downs is early morning and dusk, as the warm light is soft and compliments the environment. Alternatively, I'll photograph on a day with patchy cloud, as it creates interesting patterns and shadows on the Downs. I also love stormy conditions when there's a possibility of a rainbow.

I often make use of winding paths and roads as they lead you through the photograph adding a wonderful depth.
